[NU Sports] Football Talk

Agree with Mr. Hodges. For all the so-called good defensive players we had last year, the last 3 games were horrific. Even Texas Tech ran the ball with success. Yuch. But its a new season; if the defense can play like it did for the 1st 9 games (which was suspect to begin with), we'll be in every game, and win most of them. I believe we'll FINALLY run the ball with great effectiveness this season, and that will help our defense as well as Persa not having to run for his life. I look for great things from Trumpy, Smith and Schmidt running behind an offensive line that will live up to its billing.
One thing I disagree with the consensus: if Persa isn't healed or gets hurt, our season takes a hit. BS. Colter and/or Watkins benefited from last year's playing time, and I see the running game getting yards like Herron and Wright did this decade (ooops, the last decade:). Obviously Persa is the best option, but our season won't go down the drain if Persa goes down.

Early prediction: The only reason I'm not calling for a BCS type of year is questions on defense and uncertainty in our kicking game. If we can get those areas ironed out early in the season, LOOK OUT. We'll learn much at BC and at Army; especially Army to see how we stand up against a run-oriented team. I'd be torqued if we don't go at least 8-4; hopefully better. Let's see how Kenosha goes; hopefully we'll know how Persa's doing at that point.

    GO CATS!! Eric

I've been out of the loop for some time, but this conversation has
missed what is likely the most glaring deficiency, which was
especially obvious over the final 3 games of last season: defense.
While Persa's ability to lead the ball-control offense certainly
helps, it still won't fix the problem of just not being able to stop
anyone, especially on the ground. This will be especially critical
when facing a team like Nebraska whose strength is easily on defense
and won't let even great offensive teams run up the score.
