[NU Sports] Football Talk

I agree that the defense has to get better if we are going to see a run at a League Championship.
In my 10-2 scenario, I had us losing to Nebraska and dropping the season opener to BC, both for the same reasons - their defense shuts down our offense. I think that we can beat MSU late in the season because MSU hasn't demonstrated that they can finish any season. We also have a pretty easy run up to that game to generate some momentum with Rice and Minny. That still means that we have to beat PSU in Evanston (have we ever done that?), Iowa on the road, and Illinois early in the season when they still feel good about themselves.
Nebraska, in comparison, has a non-con game against Washington and a BT sched that goes Wisky, OSU, Minny, and MSU to start. If they make it through that schedule with less than two losses, they deserve to play in the league championship game. They finish up the season with road games at PSU and UoM, and Iowa at home which should be a great game and could determine who goes to the championship.
So like all of our runs at a BT championship, the stars will have to align for something special to happen, but we have had a history of stellar alignment when we've had a senior QB running the show. Hopefully that will happen this year too.

I've been out of the loop for some time, but this conversation has
missed what is likely the most glaring deficiency, which was
especially obvious over the final 3 games of last season: defense.
While Persa's ability to lead the ball-control offense certainly
helps, it still won't fix the problem of just not being able to stop
anyone, especially on the ground. This will be especially critical
when facing a team like Nebraska whose strength is easily on defense
and won't let even great offensive teams run up the score.
