I thought the effort was much better last night, but we really were physically
outmatched at a couple of positions (which was not the case against WI in my
opinion).
Although we certainly got outplayed at center last night, it was really Mbakwe
that killed the Cats on the boards. We could get by with a Luka-style center
(which suits Carmody's offense) if we could plug in a power forward with
Mbakwe's combination of quickness, strength, hops, and all-out effort. The good
news is he's been doing it to everyone else too, but it was really a problem for
the Cats in particular. Unlike on Sunday, it looked like we had guys boxing him
out last night, but he repeatedly went up and over them to bring down rebounds.
We still could have won the game with better outside shooting, especially from
Thompson. But those shooting numbers aren't likely to be much better if we just
keep moving it around the perimeter and then launching contested three-pointers
(the "ring-around-the-rosy" approach in Carmody's words). Shon commented
repeatedly on the lack of movement last night. There's no Mbakwe hiding on NU's
bench, so if there's any chance at having a good season, they'll need to find
their groove again on offense.
Mostly I was reminded again of how much we miss Coble.
Tom
