We'll have to see what the ratings are. I had the first half on in the background, but after such a sloppy start (despite Kirk trying to explain it as great defense, it just looked like two rusty teams to me) I lost interest and went down to the pool. When I came back, I saw I hadn't missed anything. The final couple minutes were exciting, but given the expectations of a shootout, I wonder how many people made it up through all the turnovers and punts.
It's a slow process of withdrawal for a college football fan, but I can honestly say that the NU game and Rose Bowl were the only games I saw a majority of this bowl season, and that's unusual. It just seemed like every time I'd flick past ESPN in the past 10 weeks a bowl game was on, yet I wasn't interested. Even the Big Ten and B(C)S games didn't hold much draw - the Iowa game sounded pretty good though.
ESPN is a great network, no doubt, but since they're largely responsible for this excess of bowl games, I won't shed any tears for them overpaying for the B(C)S and the welfare bowls. I know they're counting on a long-term benefit of getting people used to watching the Rose Bowl on cable, but it just seems like they have diluted their product. Back when it was "bowl week," they had a big game every night and it seemed to be an event. But "bowl month" just seemed to be interminable. Time will tell, I guess, but I can't imagine the ratings for any of their games were better this year than in the past couple years.
But on to next year and renewed hope for every school that they too can have the honor of losing to the SEC champ in the title game! :)
