IMHO, the goal is till the NCAA Tournament, but right now, you don't let your head coach
dangle in the wind as recruiting steps up.
Cats make the Dance and he's got another year, they don't and then you re-evaluate before
he takes off to Croatia to look for a center.

In other words, the goal for Men's Basketball isn't appearing in the NCAA tournament (or
competing for a Big Ten title), it is posting a better record than Kevin O'Neill, Ricky
Byrdsong or Rich Falk ?

I'm sure the recruiting angle is a factor, but I think Greenstein pretty much
answers the question in the last couple of paragraphs by noting that Carmody's
won at a much higher rate than any of his predecessors dating back many years,
especially so in recent years.
Add to that the fact that he's attracting some pretty strong talent lately, and
it's not a surprise to me that an extension was offered.
By the way, the big new purple banners hanging in W-R look *really* nice. Classy
move on the part of the new athletics braintrust. There are some pretty
impressive performances noted among them. Sadly the men's b-ball banner is a bit
sparse.
I was particularly fond of the Lacrosse banner--celebrating four Tewaaraton
Trophy winners in big time, and then, in somewhat understated fashion, 5
consecutive national championship years. Cool stuff.
