"Coach in Waiting" doesn't work well when other teams come calling.
Just ask Maryland

This certainly has taken on an aspect of "dead man walking".
Since the Harbaugh option is off the table, will the new AD there take the risk of another 2-3 years of bad Michigan teams or give Rich Rod another year with a coach in waiting perhaps running the defense?

It's a 3-4 year job at best in 99% of the cases, whereas at Michigan or especially Stanford, you can pretty much stay as long as you want. At least in Pete Carroll's case he was skipping town ahead of the NCAA penalties. Harbaugh's a pretty good college coach - why leave that?
