[NU Sports] The lesson from this?

Hey Alan, I'm flexible -- I'll look backwards OR look forward. Give me a playoff or give me tradition. Just don't stick me in purgatory hell of the B(C)S! :)
What we have now is neither - and most of the arguments you make is more of a case pushing for a playoff than a defense of the B(C)S.

However, if we're stuck with this "worst of both worlds" system that has ruined the Orange Bowl (at least they drew more fans than the Dolphins tonight, I guess) and Sugar Bowl (basically now an SEC consolation bowl), at least quit meddling with the Rose Bowl (the one bowl that has worked under the system with sellouts and ratings) by forcing them to take non-AQ teams or Miami/Oklahoma/etc.
Oh well ... I know ... broken record ... same old B(C)S different year ... sorry, I just don't want to accept a mediocre ending every year to the greatest sport on earth.
For those of you who are truly happy with the B(C)S as it is now, I apologize ... maybe one day someone will explain to me why this is a good idea. :) On the plus side, the monthlong glut of bowls will someday end, I'm told, and then you'll have 8 or 9 month when the B(C)S is out of season and we can all talk about more productive things like why we need more playmakers on defense or how legends and leaders really is starting to grow on you. :)

I feel like a lot of this, all season long, has been wistful longing for a time and a day that is just plain over. Like "Flashdance" and the Reagan presidency. Done.
Confession: I liked it better when the Big Ten and Pac-10 met each year in Pasadena, too. With this system, which admittedly is imperfect, most years there's a pretty good chance they still will.

Reality check: things change.
Bo and Woody are part of history. The Wildcats don't suck any longer. Penn State has been in the Big Ten for nearly 20 years now. Nebraska is part of the deal now. ESPN is a cable channel that's way more vital than its network sister ABC.

My younger brother shaved his mustache the other day. He had been wearing it since 1987. He said afterward that he should have done it a long time ago -- that hanging on to something that was cool in the '80s maybe wasn't so cool in 2011.

Sometimes there's a lot of value in tradition and sometimes there's not.
Stephen, I fully respect your position. But maybe it's time to consider the way things are, not the way you want them to be. It's all in what you want to invest your time and energy in, you know?

Oh yeah ... and the B(C)S and ESPN suck for targeting the one bowl that had managed to survive their onslaught against tradition. It won't be long before you see large chunks of unsold seats in Pasadena like you'll see in Miami tonight or in Phoenix with the super-low rated Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Eve (the one that was outdrawn by a hockey game :) ).
