Based on the best numbers I could find:
conf bowls record payout simplified split
SEC 10 bowls 3-3 (4 to go) $54.275 million $4.523 million
Big Ten 8 bowls 2-5(1 to go) $49.275 million $4.476 million
Pac Ten 4 bowls 1-1(2 to go) $38.425 million $4.843 million
Big 12 8 bowls 3-4(1 to go) $32.1375 million $2.678 million
ACC 8 bowls 4-3(1 to go) $28.98 million $2.415 million
Big East 6 bowls 2-2(2 to go) $23.555 million $2.944 million
Notre Dame 1 bowl 1-0 $ 1.9 million $1.9 million
and for comparison, Eric's proposal
Big Ten 8 bowls $32.9875 million $2.999 million
Where simplified split is total Bowl take divided by number of team (to keep the numbers consistent) We add a 12th share for the league office, not sure about the other split algorithms.
Based on this,
a) our league's per-team payoff was the best in FBS football, better than the SEC (don't tell this to ESPN), and way better than the Big 12,
b) Eric's proposal has merit, but the per-team payout would drop 33% from $4.5 million to 3 million, and
c) Notre Dame, too good to join our league, got a paltry $1.9 million, less even than Minnesota. The fiction, that they have 'their own network', and don't have to share revenues, spread by many in the sports media (it is constantly invoked on Chicago Sports Talk Radio).

Great post! Great idea! But I wouldn't want to touch NIU this year!

First of all Jeff, I am a statistics wonk; I'm not sure what a wonk is but I
are one!
Good points in your post point to something patently obvious to me. Why do
we consistently get 2 teams in the BCS? Money, and only money. The Big 10
should do the right thing and tell the BCS to shove it; break ranks and send our
champ to the Rose Bowl; end of story. If were not going to have a play-off, we
should put our teams in position to win more bowl games. To wit:
Rose: Ohio St. vs. TCU
Capital One: Wisconsin vs. Alabama
Outback: Mich. St. vs. Florida
Gator: PSU vs. Miss. St.
Insight: Michigan vs. Missouri
Texas: Iowa vs. Baylor
Ticket City: Illinois vs. Texas Tech
Little Caesar's: Northwestern vs. NIU
Would we win all of them? No. But this line-up looks much evenly matched than
what we get every bowl season. FWIW, I think we'd have a hell of a time with
NIU.
