In our case I believe Carmody allowed Coble to become a problem child.
So even when after 11 years when he finally assembles a cast of players
capable of the dance, he blows it. A great coach would have found away
to keep his team together.

Disagree.

Coble was high maintenance pretty much from the start. That may not be
his fault or Carmody's fault. Sometimes stuff (like your mom diagnosed
with cancer and you getting injured) just happens and everybody has to
deal with it the best they can.

A great coach has the character to keep the good of the team a higher
priority than the desires of any one player even when that means that
the team may be less competitive.

Did anybody question Tom Izzo's release of Korie Lucious? Clearly they
are a weaker team now and may not make the NCAA tourney.

I don't know what went on between Carmody and Coble.

What I do know is that Carmody isn't stupid. He knew what the loss of
Coble meant to this team. He also made this decision before he got a
contract extension, so I'm sure he was aware of the professional risk he
was taking too. I'm fairly certain that he doesn't have a death wish,
so I suspect that it was something that he saw coming for a while.

You are also assuming that if Carmody had accommodated Coble, that the
rest of the season would have been hearts and roses. It could also have
just as easily been just the first of a series of ultimatums that would
have ended up in the same place.

I'm not suggesting that Carmody is a great coach, but I am saying that
with the information we have, he got this particular decision right and
that every coach that we DO consider great would have done exactly the
same thing.
