> Still, this is not the end of the world and it is certainly not Phillips "fault". His job is to get us into the best bowl game that he can. It's Fitz's job to win them. If we continue this streak of qualifying for a bowl game every year, he will win one.
Not sure I completely agree. Yeah, it's Fitz's job to win games, but
why stack the deck against him, which is most assuredly what Phillips
did, with help from Jim Delany.
Anyway, Tom Osborne took Nebraska to 25 bowl games in 25 seasons, winning
only 10 of them. At one point he lost 7 in a row, from 1987-1993, I
think he holds the NCAA record for most consecutive bowl losses by a coach.
(And the joke making the rounds at the time was: Why doesn't Tom Osborne's
wife serve him cereal for breakfast? She's afraid he'll lose the bowl.)
He may also hold the record for most bowl losses by a coach, unless Paterno
had more.
Northwestern's losses have been under 3 different coaches, Notre Dame's
were under several different coaches, too.
