[NU Sports] Bad news for the B(C)S ...

Got an e-mail yesterday from the Cardinals' stadium letting me know that plenty of lower-bowl tickets were available for the Fiesta Bowl.

Uh oh. You mean to tell me that the #3 vs. #4 team in the nation can't sell out a bowl? Anyone wanna guess how many empty seats will be in Miami this year for the Orange Bowl? Probably fewer than last year ... but still, the Fiesta was the one bowl that had made out well (a bit too well, according to the recent financial scandal here with the bowl) in the B(C)S system. Now even a game between #3 and #4 is a tough sell?

Hmm ...

- Higher ratings? Nope. Ratings were down around 10% last year
- Better attendance? Nope. Again, look at any Orange Bowl the past decade and count the empty seats ... only two bowls have topped 30,000 in attendance so far
- Tradition? Nope. There have been more Rose Bowls with teams from Texas, Oklahoma, Florida and Nebraska in the past decade than a true Big Ten/Pac 10 champions match.
- Meaningful regular season? Apparently not when Alabama and LSU face.

So ... why are we propping up this glut of welfare bowls (did anyone really watch that 6-6 MAC team vs. that 6-6 CUSA team last week?) and supporting this system again?????????? Why must such an amazing sport always end its season with a big lump of coal???
