[NU Sports] Interesting - Paul Quinn College (lost to Baylor)

This sure sounds like a mismatch, and a bit of a joke, BUT

The smaller NAIA and Div III colleges know that having basketball and football teams helps
round out their student body.

Having those teams gives them access to kids who might normally just head down the road to
the local community college after a halfway decent time playing high school ball.

It also helps open the wallets of alumni during fundraising, those alums like to see their
alma mater in the papers once in a while, and having a team doesn't hurt getting more
positive stories printed.

My middle son, David, the football lineman, would have stayed home and worked as a
carpenter if Greensboro College hadn't had a football team. He was too small to play above
D3, but he was able to eventually start 2 of his 4 years, which culminated in a degree and
several job opportunities among Greensboro's alums after graduation.

Greensboro was a small time ladies finishing school affiliated with the Methodist Church
when the trustees decided to become a co-ed institution. They limped along with an 80-20
female to male student population, producing some decent musicians and theater people,
mostly schoolteachers.

Then they added a football team.

Immediately they added 100 new men to their student body, which also brought more male
students, bringing the radio closer to 50-50.

As long as they don't "sell their soul" to get a winning team, I don't see any problem
with smaller colleges using sports to add to their student populations. The game with
Baylor will be a footnote in the Paul Quinn College history, but when they're out
recruiting students, it's one more tool in the bag for the colleges reps to use on college
night at the local HS.

Besides, like Delaware State and University of MD Eastern Shore, the money helps pay for
the program.
