So at least in NU's case this theory hasn't held because I'm sure NU was
more excited than its opponent to be in virtually every bowl game it was
invited to since 1995.

Then again, there's the theory that the team that actually wants to be
in the bowl game is the team most likely to win the game.
You'd have to say that in this instance the motivation factor clearly
favors Northwestern. No bowl win since 1949, as we know, all too
painfully ...
