I'd completely agree that NU needs to get that elusive win as it's become
the 800 lb. gorilla in the room.  BUT, I'd argue that it isn't exactly a
link to the Dark Ages since NU didn't go to ANY bowls between 1949 and
1995; this will be NU's 9th between 1995 and 2011.

Sorry, but that is a meaningless comparison.  NU has gone to bowls in the 
past decade and a half because there are so blasted many of them.  They 
didn't go to bowl games between 1949 and 1995 because A) they usually had 
awful teams, and B), in the case of in 1962 and 1970, there was no game 
available.  While four bowl games (as once there were) was insufficient, I 
would argue that NO 6-6 team should be going to post-season.  Yes, I know 
it's good for the teams involved, but the entire bowl scene has been 
cheapened by the sheer abundance of them.  We beat five weak teams and 
somehow we get rewarded.  We're not alone in that regard, but it makes no 
sense.
