[NU Sports] Jim Phillips Greatest Hits

Whether you think Houston / playing in ATM's backyard is a "victory" for NU football, there is no doubt that Mr. Phillips has done an exceptional job of selling NU on the national scene and in the Chicago area.
NU got hosed by the bowls in our last title year of 2000, but we've "overplayed" our bowls in recent years and a lot of that is Phillips' push to get the purple out there -- not to mention getting GameDay to come to Wrigley and the move to get NUMB under the athletic department (which, I agree, was long overdue). I could not be more pleased with NU's AD and head coach right now and the job they are doing to brand Northwestern football.
Interestingly, I was flipping through channels the other night and came across the Syracuse basketball game and the one sign read "Syracuse: New York's University" or something like that ... reminded me of the "Chicago's Big Ten Team" line.
I just wish he could have gotten NU out here in Phoenix (though that would have meant an even worse matchup with Oklahoma -- not sure why the folks here opted for a repeat visit from the Hogeyes and bypassed on a PSU/OU top 25 mega-name matchup, but whatever ...) for the bowl season. One of these years!
GO CATS!!!

I loved this quote from the Indianapolis Star article on Purdue going to Detroit:
"With Michigan securing a BCS at-large bid to the Sugar Bowl, it appeared the Boilermakers were headed to the TicketCity Bowl in Dallas.
However, Northwestern worked its way into the Meineke Car Care Bowl in Houston, giving the TicketCity Bowl an opportunity to select Penn State, which had fallen throughout the selection process. The Insight, Taxslayer.com Gator and Meineke Car Care Bowls all passed on Penn State."

I'm sure the reporter would have loved to have said "weaseled" or "finagled" but had to settle for the more friendly "worked." It still comes off as a little snarky and sour grapes-ish.
