[NU Sports] R-E-S-P-E-C-T

We are starting to get some respect in a few places - The Sporting News' preview had us as second in the northwest division and #16 nationally.

The preseason polls are always a bit funny and somewhat meaningless ... though with few teams playing major conference crossover games in September these days, it does matter if you're a title contender where you start off. And in that vein, it looks like the new Big Ten isn't getting much respect this year.

I don't think we have a top 5 team (though a couple have potential) and it's hard to quibble with Bama/LSU/Quackers/Overrated Oklahoma and FSU ... or even Boise and overhyped Stanford.

But Okie State and ATM in the top 10 ahead of the Big Ten leaders??? Really??? Are they being paid off by Bob Stoops to inflate their Big XII opponents' ranks now that the two-team league has become a one-team one with Texas' demise (though I don't buy that completely yet - they were a QB injury away from a title two years ago)??? C'mon!

Other than that, OSU and MSU seem a tad high, PSU way too low (they'll take an early hit from Bama and drop off the radar, but may not lose again until Madison in the final week) and don't sleep on Iowa either ... they get a kind schedule and are better without the pressure.

It's nice for NU to be in the mix ... now we just gotta stay in there and keep climbing.

BEAT B.C.! GO CATS!!!

The Preseason Coaches' Poll is out today, with the Sooners in the No. 1 slot:

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/rankings/_/poll/2/week/1

Five Big Ten teams made the Top 25:

Wisky-10
Neb.----11
tOSU---16 (Wonder where they would be with The Sweater)
Sparty--17
JoePa---25

As for my traditional favorite category--"Others receiving votes" (since that's where we often find NU)--there are 3 more BT representattives:

Hawkeyes--41 votes (or No. "30", if the Poll went that far; not a comfortable perch for Ferentz)

'Cats----------30 votes (or No. "31"; We are definitely on "the radar"and ahead of Mich...)

Wolverines---19 votes (or No. "33")

Thus, the following BT squads got no love at all from the Coaches:

Illini
Boilers
Hoosiers
Gophers

It will be interesting to compare this poll to the final one in January.  Stay tuned, College FB fans....
