[NU Sports] On John Shurna

Shurna is a junior with another year of eligibility.
It sounds like both Thompson (who wants a workout buddy to get ready for the NBA scouts)
and Carmody encouraged him to look at the pros.
I'm pretty sure that Carmody expects him to be back - it would probably take the Bulls (or
his favorite team) to draft him early for him to go pro (IMHO)
Besides, he was scoring 25+ points per game before he hurt his ankle. Just imagine what he
might do as a Senior without any injuries....

I hope you guys are spot in. As a fan I don't want to see him go. But I also hope that he
realizes a key reason to go to NU is that he has (or could have) a prestigious degree to
fall back on if he doesn't make it. And he certainly isn't a slam dunk to make it or make
a ton of money attempting to go pro. I suppose he could always finish the degree in the
off season if he does play pro but then again he might not. As Dennis pointed out, Autrey
,as a Heisman finalist (I think) is Exhibit A

I have to believe that's exactly what he's doing here. And (assuming he does
indeed come back), the exercise will probably benefit NU next year, because
Shurna will get some expert advice on how to improve his game.
I think that if John continues to improve over the next year, he will have a
decent shot at a real NBA career.
