[NU Sports] On John Shurna

Couldn't agree more.

Shurna strikes me as a smart kid.

His experience playing on the US Select Team last summer convinced him
that he had enough game to play with anyone. I think that's why he was
able to slide so gracefully into the role of "the man" when Coble didn't
return.

Reading a draft report on him, NBA insiders are impressed with how much
he improved his game from his sophomore to junior years. His biggest
assets to play the small forward spot are his length, basketball smarts,
and coachability. If he is going to play in the NBA he has to add
strength and lateral quickness because he will have to guard smaller
players on the perimeter and also be expected to rebound.

It would be very exciting to see a quicker stronger Shurna on the floor
next year, 'cause you can bet that he is going to get pounded again in
conference play. If he can continue to score at the pace that he did
when he was healthy, improve his perimeter defense, and rebound a lot
better - he'll have a real shot at the NBA in 2012.

I have to believe that's exactly what he's doing here. And (assuming he
does
indeed come back), the exercise will probably benefit NU next year,
because
Shurna will get some expert advice on how to improve his game.

I think that if John continues to improve over the next year, he will
have a
decent shot at a real NBA career.
