[NU Sports] Big Ten basketball revenue

Forbes has done an analysis of Big Ten basketball revenue using the IRS 990s
that all non-profits are required to file. As a result, the information
should be reasonably good. The analysis is based on the 2009-10 season and
provides surprising, at least to me, data - particularly about NU and its
place in the league.

The Big Ten placed fourth among all leagues in NCAA tournament money with
$82.9 million over the last six years (all NCAA tourney money is figured on
and distributed based on a six year rolling conference members performance).
The Big East was first, followed by the Big 12 and the ACC. None of the
figures took into account any conference realignment for any years following
2009-10.

For NU specific numbers, we were 7th in the league in basketball revenue
with $10 million - the league mean is $12.5 million and the median is $13.7
million. Purdue was last at $7.8 million. We were also 7th in basketball
profits. Reflecting the relatively poor attendance at Ryan Field, we were
3rd in percentage of total department revenue derived from men's basketball
behind Illinois and Indiana. All in all, and considering the attendance
issues in basketball, I'm surprised we ranked as high as we did.
