There was a story back during his time at NU, Tex had 5 of the top kids from Chicago ready to sign and come play for the Cats.

None of them were admitted and Tex realized what he ware really up against coaching the Wildcats.

Can't confirm any of this, but it makes a good story.

FYI - PHIL JACKSON'S COMMENTS, REACTING TO TEX WINTER'S HALL OF FAME ELECTION
"For the past 15 years, there have been people telling me that Tex is going in the Hall of Fame," Jackson said. "When Tex was verbally and cognizantly capable of receiving this award, I would have been much happier. The fact now that he's had a stroke that's impaired his capabilities, it kind of irritates me a little bit that this wasn't done 10 years ago when he was still serving basketball in such a great capacity." Jackson then added, "Still in all, I'm happy that it's been rewarded."

And no, Rich Falk isn't a good bet as the Hall's next inductee because his NU Wildcats beat national champion Michigan State on the Spartans' run to the title in 1979.

That and being good friends with phil jackson and michael jordan.

Happy to see the Bulls returning to former glory with another great
player in Derrick Rose.

Tex Winter, who was head coach at NU during parts of the 70's,was
elected to Basketball's Hall of Fame. I guess his leading of the Cats to
upset victories over Kentucky (1975)and Michigan (1977) must have sealed
his claim. If I am not mistaken those 2 teams were runner ups in the
NCAA the prior season
