[NU Sports] FW: interesting column by NU alum Darren Rovell

Like it or not, there is a quid pro quo here that is unavoidable. Kids
play sports in return for an education.

The problem is that Universities are able to generate a lot of money
from some of the sports that these kids play. As a result, that money
sometimes corrupts what otherwise should be a simple exchange of
services.

The NCAA has put itself in the middle of this process as the governing
body. Universities have reacted by putting their own infrastructures in
place to protect themselves from NCAA sanctions (and potentially to help
the kids too). So now we have increasingly complicated rule making to
deal with the real issues of students, for example, whose families can't
afford to support them during their time in school, but because they are
athletes they can't work to support themselves like other students.
That's because some people in the past used jobs to funnel cash to kids
to entice them to play for particular schools.

I appreciate your libertarian vision of "adult" self sufficiency, but,
as in most real world applications of libertarianism, it just doesn't
work.

Jeff

It should not be a university's responsibility to see to it that its
students have spending money. As to not helping athletes with academics

after their eligibilty ends, I would need to see something more than
anectodal evidence that is occurring. Even if it is, they're seniors or

grad students by then and should have figured out how to study. They
have
no spring practice to consume their time and, if they're not turning
pro, no
requirement to hit the gym either. Either you treat students as adults
or
you don't. If a university must hand-hold students through four or more

years of education, then it's time to return to a system that includes
parietal hours.
