[NU Sports] NU-CMU final

Trumpy came in during the drive for the FG at the beginning of the second 1/2, so not garbage time at all. He was getting ~3-5 yards per carry on that drive and his long was 11 of all the carries and worst at -1. There was probably 1 or 2 that I thought he could have broken for bigger yardage (of course he would have gotten caught - we DON'T ever have a RB with break away ability). I expect to see a lot of Mike early next week against the Golden Rodents to see if he is (to steal from Randy Walker) "the guy". I hope so! We can't wait for Adonis to get healthy or another year of recruiting. :) This team could be special if we find a running game to go with Dan, Dan the Persa Man.

Go Cats!

Hope you're right on Trumpy - I guess I thought a lot of it came late and I'd like to see it when it mattered more.
As for Fields, I think he could be a fine football player - just not a running back. D-back or quick out receiver maybe, but we need to keep the Trumpy/Schmitt backfield and work on improvement there.
It's scary to think what Persa could do with some backfield help to keep defenses honest!
As for the league today ... mostly big blowouts as expected, but the Purdue and PSU games were intriguing. The Boilers are clearly struggling and were overrated by some (including me) coming in, but I won't bury them yet as they made improvements under the backup QB. As for PSU, I'm not too sure what to make of it - maybe Temple is really good, or PSU is vulnerable ... but that was not a good performance today.
So let conference play begin! Interesting to think that if you include Nebraska (who appear to be the favorites now in the Little XII), the league has seven ranked teams and a 4-0 Northwestern in the "also getting votes" area. Should be a fun race, but we gotta win the gottawins, and Minnesota is a gottawin next week. It took a couple miracle finishes to get a win at the Humpdome for NU, hopefully the new stadium will be kinder to the Cats.

I disagree with some of your analysis: the running play improved exponentially with Mike Trumpy in the backfield. He saw the holes he had between the tackles, hit them as hard as possible and as fast as possible. If he continues to average 4 per carry, he's going to be something with Mr. Persa making magic with his feet, arm and decision making. I stood corrected when I said that our running woes appeared to be line related as he was able to make something on almost every touch (only one carry was for negative yardage). He didn't stay in for obvious passing downs, so perhaps his blocking and route running need some work still, but I identified him in the backfield when he came in and had little hope for any run game improvement based on what I had seen, but he was great 57 yards on 12 carries. Schmitt is a good blocker when he's kept in to do so (holding call notwithstanding as the officiating sucked) and can catch coming out of the backfield. Now that he appears to be holding onto the ball, Trumpy and Schmitt could be a good tandem.
The running game had issues when we went away from the hot hand thinking that maybe Arby should get one more shot to hold onto the job. He was clearly angry with himself afterwards as I heard him yell "Sh!t!" coming to the sidelines after the fumble that sparked CMUs almost comeback. Unfortunately, it appears Arby needs to concentrate on baseball.
Hunter Bates tried WAY too hard in relief of Jared Carpenter and had 3 major whiffs on tackles to go with his 11 stops. Saw Quentin Davie take a bad angle on an easy tackle at one point as well that went for big yards. Justan Vaughn needs to be more aggressive in coverage as he was in the right position on the last TD throw but waited for the receiver to catch it before attempting to make a play instead of stepping in front and knocking it down.
But, there's always a let down game in the early season and if you can come away from a game that wasn't your best played with a win, it's good.

Just win, eh? 4-0 - nice start for the Cats!

Love the D front, love Persa and Ebert and love Dunsmore ... BUT ...

- The line and running play needs to improve in a hurry
- The secondary looked sloppy at the end
- The discipline, as Coach Fitz just said on TV, was lacking

And we need to move Arby Fields out of the backfield. Maybe he can be a receiver or D-back, but he can NOT carry the ball and be an effective running back. His turnover almost sparked a CMU comeback.

So on to a winnable game at Minnesota - though if we play like we did today, it could easily be a loss. No more letups now that conference play is upon us! Whatever the kinks to work out, 4-0 feels good (and necessary) at this point of the season! GOPHER MEAT! GOPHER MEAT!

GO CATS!!!
