[NU Sports] PENN STATE TO START VARSITY HOCKEY; BIG TEN TO FOLLOW?

BU hockey is successful financially because New England is hockey crazy. The Beanpot Tourney is huge. One could also get a flavor of Harvard Hockey by reading Love Story !

Some of the northern midwestern states like michigan, wisconsin ,minnesota and the dakotas probably have rabid fans as well but not sure how much TV revenue or attendance revenue could be generated to offset the costs even in those states. It is also unlikely that other BT states (IMHO)would have a lot of fan interest and therefore it would likely be a big drain financially for NU. In better times (or with a more profitable football and/or hoops program to help underwrite the losses) we might be inclined to eat the cost

Penn State is adding women's as well.

When I asked by our WMVP AM on-air talent to ask Rick Taylor in 1995 why
Northwestern doesn't have a hockey team (I was an '84-'88 club hockey
member) he said that we didn't have the $21 Million we would need. (The number
has stuck with me all these years). The $88 Million that was donated to Penn
State would cover those costs for both a men's and women's team (but not an
arena -- do they have one on campus? Anyone?)

My opinion is that the next school to go Div I (if there were any to
follow) would be Illinois women (Title IX) then men...but that's just 100%
conjecture. Remember: hockey is and can be a revenue sport! (Boston Univ dropped
unprofitable Div 1AA football program, but to this day maintains it's
PROFITABLE Men's Hockey program -- thank you Bean Pot).

Oh, and btw - off topic -- my niece, an upcoming senior at Eastview High
School in Eagan, MN, just accepted her full ride to play women's hockey at U
Conn (says the proud uncle)! :)

Go Big Ten hockey!!!!
