First, note that all TV rights are controlled by the home team.
Northwestern is playing on the road this weekend.
I assume you're talking about the Indiana @ Western Kentucky game this
weekend that is on the BTN. This is the first time ever that the BTN is
broadcasting out of a non-Big Ten home stadium and was likely a special deal
set up because Western Kentucky (member of the Sun Belt) doesn't have any
overriding TV contracts to worry about.
Our upcoming opponent, Rice, is a member of Conference USA, which does have
TV contracts in place (ESPN) and likely reserves the rights even if they
don't broadcast. Also, Rice has their own web PPV service which allows them
to make money from people like us who really want to watch the games, which
makes them less likely to allow another TV service to come in and broadcast
the game (unless they get paid handsomely).
Finally, note that the BTN production trucks' drive to Bowling Green, KY for
the Indiana game is much more reasonable than the drive to Houston for the
NU game. This logistical hurdle likely made it even less likely for the BTN
to be able to broadcast the game.
Do note that if you are in Chicago Kendall's down in Lincoln Park is
planning on picking up the web feed on their big screens (as reported at
LakeThePosts.com).
As has been noted elsewhere, hopefully this is the last instance of NU not
getting on TV since more and more college games are now on somewhere.
