I hardly think it was too early. Who knew if either team would score again. Can you imagine if they took the PAT and lost 17-16 ?

The ND Purdue game had a similar moment except they were down by 15 when the Boilers scored a TD early in the 4th. If they were to score another TD they would either have to have gone for 2 then or after the next TD. They chose to take the PAT on the first one

But this brings up another issue. Perhaps both Vandy and NU should go for 2 more often since they have had several botched PAT attempts

Also does college still have the rule that you can run back a botched attempt and get 2 points ? If so NU may have tried that instead of falling on the ball after vandy's last attempt and really sealed the game (and my bet on NU -3) ?

<Finally, was anyone else thinking it was too soon for Vandy to go for two
that first time? Came back to hurt them.

I have always said that no team should go for two until late in the fourth
quarter. If anyone did a study, I would suspect they would find it damaging
more often than helpful. Remember the '96 Rose Bowl? Twice the Cats went
for two and failed. As a result, they were down nine points when they tried
that fateful field goal at the end of the game. Had they been down seven,
they would have gone for it on fourth down and maybe continued the drive to
a tie.
