Paul,
Thanks very much for sharing the news and your poignant tribute and recollections. May wonderful memories of your dad always be a blessing and a source of comfort to you and your whole family.
Your stories are deeply touching and evoke so many similarly warm feelings in our own experiences.
Wishing you and your family solace and strength from Saul's legacy.
Thinking of you and yours...

As we embark on a hopefully exciting new season, fellow listers please indulge me in a little personal aside, which, under the circumstances, may be understandable.
My dad passed away this morning, peacefully and at home, at age 92. He was an amazing guy and a true member of the Greatest Generation, having been a Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps in the Pacific Theater in WW II, serving as a Bombadier on B-24's. He loved to watch 'Cat football on the tube--not as much as his crazy, intense alum son--but he enjoyed the underdog aspect, and loved that it made me so happy when we won.
He only attended 2 'Cat games in his life--both memorable. The first was nearly 40 years ago--Sept, 1970--'Cats hosting ND on a glorious Saturday afternoon (no 11 a.m. starts in those days) before a packed house at Dyche. We were tied 14-14 at the half, and I was stunned--and hooked. That was a terrific NU team, led by Mike Adamle. While we lost 35-14, we had a great time nonetheless, and he loved the atmosphere and our picturesque campus. He only returned once (since we were from NYC)--for my rainy graduation.
Then, on New Year's Day, 1997, three proud generations of Levinson men--Saul (my dad), Yours Truly, and my son David (then all of 7 years old), trooped up the steep winding ramp and stairs to the Upper Deck at the broiling Citrus Bowl to watch us fall behind Payton Manning and the Volunteers, make a great comeback to 21-21, and then aftere Payton to Peerless (Price) before the half, saw a dull, painful second half of all Tennessee. My dad was pushing 80 at the time, but he made the steep climb, although I was worried about him at the time, and we had a great family day together.
The year before he insisted on paying for my airfare out to Pasadena from Florida, where our entire family was on a vacation together, and I left them to take in the Rose Bowl.. He was that kind of dad--always doing more and more for his kids and grandkids. And I will always remember calling him from a payphone after the game, standing outside the Bowl, and him saying, "You must be sad", with my reply being, "Yeah, but it was such a great game."
Sharing 'Cat games and comebacks, and many, many baseball games with him leaves me with a lifetime of priceless memories, and I know I am a lucky man, especially since we spent last night together and had real closure.
Thanks for sharing in my memories.
Paul Levinson (Proud Son)

Got back home just in time to catch some OT in Salt Lake City!
Pitt, the last best (and only) hope for Big East respectability goes down. Poor
Wanny.
Utah may well get a preview of the prize they'll be playing for in the Pac 10
next season ... with TCU visiting, there's a pretty good chance the Utes run the
table. Looks like the Pac 10 got better by adding some red as well.
OSU looked impressive. Good to have football back! :)

Well, now that Time Warner and Disney have come to an agreement, I wonder
how long it will take espn3.com to become available to TWC customers?
It'd sure be nice if they got that working TODAY, so that I can watch
the NU-Vandy game tomorrow.

Here's the link to the agreement press release:
http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/2010/09/disneyabc-espn-and-time-warner-cable-sign-long-term-wide-ranging-agreement-to-carry-a-variety-of-video-digital-services/
No mention of when everything goes into effect, although if you have the
sports tier you can use "ESPN Goal Line," which is like NFL's Red Zone
channel but for college football, as early as this Saturday. That sounds
like a nice feature that I hope will expand to other cable/satellite
operators as well.

Topic #1: The NU flag was hung (with care) in front of the house this afternoon. It's Christmas Eve, my friends!
Topic #2: Prognostication: The line has fluctuated between 3-5 pts.; I saw that NU was favored by 4 today. Not a good game to lay cash on, but on our list I say we cover, but it could be a game that won't be decided until late; both the w/l and the line.
I see a 23-14 Cat win; Demos will get immediate relief by not worrying about punting. Our defense will have no trouble holding this gang in check, regardless if their good running back Norman plays. Danny-boy will do more right than wrong but throw a pick or two, but he'll also do a couple of things that will make our jaws drop.
We'll look good, not great, which will be more than we need against a team that lost its best coach they've had in years, and took a bighuge step backwards. (Note to English pros, bighuge is a word I just made up).
Topic #3: THANKS to Mike Nolan for this list. If I'm not on vacation, not a day is missed when I "check in". A hearty THANKS is warranted on Christmas Eve.
Topic #4: Fellow list member Brad Wilson wrote a terrific article on Dan Persa. Reminder: Brad is a sportswriter in the Lehigh Valley where Persa is from. Like a putz, I forget the link, but I think its Lehighvalley.com, or better yet, there is a link on ESPN Big 10 Blog; lunchtime links. Thanks Brad!!:)
Topic #5: Can you tell I'm "pumped" about a P-A boy starting for our Cats?
Topic #6: I need to get this out of my system: "...AAAAAAAH GOOOOO CATSSSS!!!" Man, I can't wait for tomorrow night!

Okay, I'm one broke ass MF who has given up on the event production world and is getting my Masters in Pysch to become a therapist. My rent check is going to bounce and my ONLY source of income at the moment is working at a restaurant. I'm scheduled to work tomorrow night.
SO to tell you how pumped I am for this game...
I asked for the night off just so I could watch!!!! Food and gas be damned!

Its great that we are all psyched for the game but this aint the Rose Bowl ! Maybe because we have a shot at beating an SEC team. Or maybe because its a minny brain bowl or maybe just because its our opener but I hope if we win tomorrow you guys will have emotional energy left to root for the Cats the next four months

If I recall correctly we "stole" Sherrick away from Northern Illinois, but
we were his only BCS offer.

Dude...it's football season (and since Pedroia, Youk and the rest of the Red Sox are on the DL and out of it), they could be playing William & Mary and I'd be this pumped!
