I agree with Mike. I am so happy (relieved) that we are not in same
division as Ohio State, that alone is a big plus for me. It would have been
fantastic to be with Indiana and Illinois, as we could almost by default
expect to be ahead of them every year in football, and thus would move into
"first division" by finishing ahead of only one more team. I don't feel nearly
as confident of the same result looking at MSU and Minnesota, which figure
to be the "bottom-feeders" in "our" division. However, for the time
being, with the Wolverines being in a weakened state, things look pretty good
for us overall. One huge imponderable is what will happen to Penn State when
Joe Pa finally hangs it up. Do they remain as one of the 3 presumed
football "power" schools in "their" division (with OSU and Wisky), or do they
fall back into the pack. And, on the other side of that coin, does Michigan
resume what it regards as its rightful place in the universe if, as and
when RichRod is sent packing? 'Cause, at the moment, given Michigan's recent
(current?) woes, "our" division would only have Iowa and Nebraska (assuming
it picks up in BT where it leaves off in B-XII) as present "powers"
(unless Fitz, Persa, et. al. can stake a claim to that category this year).
In terms of basketball, it probably doesn't matter where we are placed,
unless and until we make the "dance", so that we make ourselves relevant in
that sphere.
