[NU Sports] vote for Fitz

We have talented players who know how to study and consistently graduate
with degrees that prepare them for life after football. These are smart
articulate kids with character. They are kids we can all be proud of.

To dig down into the talent question a little more, I think that the
best gauge of individual talent is how many end up having real careers
in the NFL. We're doing better there than I can ever recall.

Finally there is the issue of success on the field.

As others have said during our long threads about replacing coaches,
there are a lot of steps to building a program that is consistently
competitive. Even the best programs suffer when either through injury
or graduation, inexperienced kids are playing skill positions. Penn
State is this year's example. So yes, we have suffered because some of
the guys we thought were going to become our next running back didn't
develop. But on the upside, we have had an unbroken string of quality
QB's stretching back a decade or so.

It appears that we are over the hump with regard to the boom and bust
cycles that plagued our last two coaches. The rest of this year will
prove that to be true.

The next step is to consistently play in the upcoming BT championship
game.

If we can do that, national championships will take care of themselves.

<It can no longer be enough for a true NU guy to walk our sidelines year

after year
<[NU still lacks]
<- a credible, Big Ten championship caliber running game has not been
developed
<- a credible, Big Ten championship caliber defense has not been
developed
<- turnovers and penalties would seem to indicate some difficulties in
preparation and discipline
<- there have been a few coaching decisions that have been questioned

Dead on accurate! NU's football team has improved in talent, depth, and

consistency, but it is not yet sufficiently talented, deep, and
consistent
to make the annual hunt for the Big Ten title a foregone conclusion,
much
less a national title. I think it likely that Fitz will keep the
program on
an upward trajectory, but we need even more talented players who know
how to
study. They are out there, but they've always matriculated somewhere
else.
