Fitz is still maturing as a coach and still makes questionable decisions or misses adjustments, however for coach of the year my personal criteria is dfferent:
Is the program moving forward academically?
Is the program moving forward athletically?
Am I more optimistic about this year than last?
Am I more optimistic about future years?
Is the program run in a very clean manner?
Do I beleive the players are good people?
Do I believe the coaches are good people?
Am I at least as proud of my football program as I was last year?
Am I at least as proud of my university as I was last year?
Would I trade our coach for any other one in college football without regards to money and contracts?

Overall we have not played up to the flashes of brilliance we have shown, nor have we developed a running back despite off-season emphasis, but we are doing better than last year(5-2 vs. 4-3).

I have to cast my lot with Mike's opinion...

When this program was not yet mature, it was enough to play hard, and get good grades, and upset a few people

But if we all share the same goal, a fully mature and quality program that produces academic All-Americans and can contend for conference and National Championships,

We have to expect the highest level of performance from everybody, from coaches and student athletes (that's how NU works).

It can no longer be enough for a true NU guy to walk our sidelines year after year

He must recruit the best young men. He must surround himself with the best staff of assistants, he must out-prepare and out-scheme all of the opposing coaches

His team must always be the most disciplined and well-prepared unit on the field.

While we all love Fitz (and I lived through the Venturi and Peay eras), I think we can all agree that:

- a credible, Big Ten championship caliber running game has not been developed
- a credible, Big Ten championship caliber defense has not been developed
- turnovers and penalties would seem to indicate some difficulties in preparation and discipline
- there have been a few coaching decisions that have been questioned

I want every professor at NU to be the best in their field. Similarly, we should expect that all of our coaches are truly the best in their field. To celebrate or even accept anything less than that runs counter to everything Northwestern stands for.

I wonder, is Fitz comfortable with those scoreboard announcements suggesting he be voted coach of the year ? Is he 100% satisfied with everything he has done this year ? And what message is the athletic department sending when it urges an 'unexamined' vote for Fitz (Vote Fitz because we say so !) ? Isn't that something we'd expect from a lesser school ? Aren't our supporters capable of more careful analysis ?
