I think you are underestimating what assistant coaches get at a Big Ten level
school, even Northwestern, by a factor of 100% or more. Salaries for the University
of Minnesota coaches are public, but I can only find data for 2008-09, during which
the lowest paid assistant coach at Minnesota got $110K. (The coaches at UM-Duluth
got a lot less, of course.)
At Nebraska, the lowest paid assistant football coach currently gets $150K, and I
think also some of the money from summer clinics.
