[NU Sports] And then there's this

I feel bad for you.
We started in 1989. There was fall rush, wet munchies, and frat parties where admittance only required a university id.
Before college I had never drank more than a single drink so munchies and frat parties were a safe introduction. I think removing that option for 18 year olds is a mistake.

Furthermore the freshman dorm experience is inviolate. You have to make to classes, study, do laundry, clean your room, but everything else is taken care of. You are also in the same boat with other freshmen some of which you will be friends with for a very long time. The kids who do 2 years of JuCo while living at home lose out on something very important.

I think this is exactly right. Over the years, including when I was
there, there has been a steady progression of steps to ban alcohol at
events on campus. We remarked at the time when some of those were being
implemented that it was simply going to move things off-campus (college
students still are going to have parties even if you tell them not to
have them), resulting in (1) even worsened town-gown relations, (2) more
drunk driving, and (3) a generally less-safe environment for students
attending those parties, particularly if they have to walk off campus
late at night on the way home.

The year I arrived at NU or maybe the spring before, residential college
munchies (mid-week social breaks) were ordered to be dry for the first
time in a long time, as the sophomores who were showing us the rope
bemoaned while recalling the "good old days" when munchies were wet.
Then came significant limitations on alcohol at fraternity parties,
requiring hired, licensed 3rd-party beer vendors, hired police security,
and--eventually--guest lists pre-approved by NU administration with
regular compliance checks. Then the fraternity tailgates were ordered
dry. I compared this with a couple weekend visits to another Big Ten
campus where the parties were, well, a lot more fun!

I understand that too much drinking is a problem and that students
living off-campus have an obligation to be good neighbors just like
anyone else. However, I do think (a) people who move within blocks of a
college ought not complain about typical college student behavior unless
they moved there before the university was in town, and (b) to the
extent that this is a problem for NU, it is a problem largely of our
alma mater's own making.

Just my $0.02.
