Usually the punter handles the holder duties in the pros, but there is a wide range of
holders in college and HS.

Many use the starting QB, more use the #2 QB to get them game experience. I've even seen
the #3 used at times.

The point, however, is that the holder and kicker have to work 100% together. If they
don't you have kicks into the line or to the right or left and a kicker who gets flustered
because there isn't much he can do.

The best holder was Danny White for the cowboys because he also punted AND was Roger
Staubach's backup. He was always a candidate to pull the ball up and throw to a WR
somewhere, or take off running ("No Danny No" - Landry). I'm sure Hunter Bates' dad
remembers that one.

When Zak was the holder, there was always the chance that he'd run the fumblerooni play
that Randy loved to run once a year. We could have used that one Saturday, but I don't
think Fitz is quite the gambler that RW was... but then sometimes you see that twinkle in
his eyes.

Well, certainly similar. The style of the kicker needs to be taken
into account, not all kickers will need the ball in the exact same place.
It is one of those things that comes with a LOT of practice involving
the snapper, the holder and the kicker.

The NCAA's limits on practice time limits how much practice they get.

Is Williams (the punter) the holder this year? Are they using the same
deep snapper? If so, maybe the new punter is getting more practice
time than the experienced place kicker.

Do NCAA limits on coaches prohibit bringing in an outside consultant
to work on this during the season?
