We watched this one from the NU section in the upper corner of TCF stadium. The
view looking down on the corner of the endzone was very reminiscent of the same
view I had of the Victory Right game in the Metrodome. And seeing Ebert's
amazing catch unfold beneath us was pretty special.
It was a frustrating game given that we appeared to be by far the better team,
but credit to the Gophers for doing the one thing they do well--the power
running game--to keep themselves in it. We were pretty fortunate to be able to
overcome so many self-inflicted wounds. My one fear the night before the game
was that sloppy play would open the doors for the Gophers, and sure enough
that's what happened. In the end, the experience may benefit the team--surely
more close games to come this year, and they learned some things about what it
takes to win.
I think the biggest things we need to see are continued improvement in the
running game, and for Persa to learn to throw the ball into the stands a little
more often. Probably a little re-dedication from the D-line when it comes to
winning the line of scrimmage against a running team.
I did catch a fair bit of the MSU game, and agree that they will be a very tough
challenge. They appear to have an even better running game than Minny, and a
better passing game as well, to go with a much better defense. However, I do
think the Cats have a decent chance. I still believe we could win (or lose)
every game left on the schedule, and MSU may be the best team we face, but we've
really closed the talent gap enough that nothing is completely out of reach.
Also, the game suggested that Wisconsin--while clearly pretty stout--is not an
elite-level team right now, so that game looks a little less daunting.
Our experience at TCF was great--really lovely facility, great burgers and brats
from the concession stand, relatively easy access. Highly recommended as a road
trip. We've got family up here, so we'll probably be back soon. I was 2-0 at NU
games in the rollerdome, and it's nice to start off 1-0 in games at TCF.
