[NU Sports] Nebraska vs. TAMU

I like the replay system in college football because it suggests that
there is a commitment by the NCAA to get things right - so coaches don't
have to challenge and if they feel they need to call a timeout to get
the replay officials attention, they aren't charged for that timeout if
the replay officials actually review the play. They also review where
the ball is spotted, whether a catch is made, fumbles, sideline plays,
and correct the clock when it gets out of synch.
I was afraid that it would slow down the game, but what additional time
it does add is generally welcomed by everyone.
In the same spirit of getting it right, I think it's time to begin the
process of reviewing the sorts of penalties that change the game. It
could be like the NFL where all penalties get reviewed in the last two
minutes of the half. If it turns out to be workable it could be
extended to the whole game. In particular, the personal foul and
holding calls that are so much judgment at the moment could probably
benefit from some review. The key would be to review calls that were
made rather than impose penalties for infractions that weren't called.
Finally, I agree that coaches are getting out of hand "working" the
refs. In return for getting the calls reviewed, I think that the refs
should simply start to penalize coaches for walking on the field and
contesting a call. They certainly do that in baseball and it seems to
work well. If the refs are going to get their judgment calls reviewed,
coaches should just back off and let the review booth do their job.

And apparently that same crew has been involved in two other games where
the
Huskers were much more heavily penalized than their opponent (including
the loss
to Texas, although Nebraska played horribly enough to lose that game
without any
help). The question going around is whether refs are punishing the
soon-to-exit-the-league Huskers. I'd like to think not.
The Omaha paper did a breakdown of the penalties. Most were deserved,
several
were inconclusive from looking at replays. Pretty much everyone seems to
agree
that the roughing-the-QB penalty that lost them the game was a bad call.
Again,
I'd like to assume it was just a bad call, not evidence of favoritism.
Pelini screwed up by getting too angry, but you can understand some
frustration.
He needs to clean that up.
Frankly, I think Fitz needs to do the same thing--he spends too much
time
yelling at refs. Needs to back that off and save it for the big moments
in my
opinion.

No way, in my opinion. You can teach someone to hang on to the ball. You
can't
teach someone to do the things VM can do with the ball in his hands.
