NU Alum and Board Member Michael Wilbon was just on 105.7 in Baltimore....
Lots of talk about his leaving the Post to concentrate on ESPN, but when asked about the
game in Wrigley, said he was against playing the game there, and doubts they would come
back. I'm sure it is just his opinion, and the talk moved on to why they don't play
football in baseball parks anymore (The Giants and the Bears were two teams mentioned)
Wilbon's opinion was that they should play future games at Soldier Field, and I'm not sure
he was more in favor of the Ill-whine-I or the Evil Empire doing it more than NU.
Only problem with NU-Illinois at Soldier is that even if it was our home game, there would
be more Ill fans in the seats because there is more room (and more ILL alums in the area).
The only big parallel I have is SMU playing all those years at Texas Stadium in
Dallas/Irving, TX.
It forced SMU to make concessions in their teams and coaches that led to the death penalty
for football. When they came back, SMU had moved to their college campus stadium, which
has been expanded quite a bit and is now a pretty good home place for the Mustangs.
There is something to be said for playing your games on campus in your own park. As soon
as you get too far away, you lose the students, and those 5,000 bodies when you're playing
well, help the team.
All and all, a good idea for Wrigley, we got lots of attention, and are still getting
talked about even on the east coast. That alone starts to atone for the loss.
I'll have more on the state of the defense later - Go Cats
