[NU Sports] Congrats Mr. Phillips!

IMHO, the present activities of the Athletic Department to advance the cause of the Wildcats is only leading to better recruiting for all sports, particularly in the Chicago area.

Remember back when Carmody's signing of Jitim Young was considered a "coup" because he represented a Chicago player?

I count 6 Chicago area kids on the team right now, yeah, we could use another big player from the city, but turning up in the NCAA's will (IMHO) solve that issue. Besides, Tavaras has had to reopen all those doors closed with the assistant coaching changes. 3 new LOI signed, one from a 6-8 forward from Chicago. Are they the top picks in the recruiting season? Probably not, but we recruit kids who are looking beyond 4 or 5 years and they are starting to buy into NU's future in both academics and athletics.

NU passed an important milestone last Friday by easily beating a regional rival. NIU probably isn't in our class, but they do garner their share of coverage in the northern half of Illinois and for a change WE WON THE GAME going away!

What all this means to me, (a guy who is involved in working with local media, trying to get coverage for a single event) is that NU now has the chance to be a presence in 3 of the 4 seasons. That is tremendous.

Football in the Fall, Basketball (Men and Women) in the Winter, and Lacrosse in the Spring, keeps the Wildcats on both the Chicago and Regional sports pages as winners. That sort of thing is the goal of every AD and SID in the country. 3 or 4 sidebar stories a week in the local paper is what makes your day.

So Mr. Phillips and his marketing guys can keep it up - as the coaches take advantage of the presence of mind we enjoy in the Chicago media right now.

Some of this coverage you can't buy, ya know.

Geez,

This is getting WAY too personal and serious.

We have complained on this list for years about attendance.

We have also each taken a turn as the AD with our suggestions about what
should/could be done to increase the profile of NU football in the
Chicago media market.
