[NU Sports] Jacob Schmidt

If you watch the spread setup when they have a back behind the QB, he stays to block until released by the QB, then he goes out into his pass pattern.

In many systems, that RB gets a call from the QB when to go out - if the QB wants the protection, he holds the RB for blocking duties. There are a whole bunch of keys that they read to decide when to release the RB, but the QB usually has the last word.

Persa has been releasing Trump a lot - primarily to add another WR to the mix, and when it works (and the O-Line blocks) we get those great 8-10 yard outlet passes. If Persa lets the RB go to fast, then he's either running for his life, or is a candidate for another sack.

An exceptional RB who can also pass block is a rarity - and in the spread, with only 2 backs, it's almost a necessity.

Now we have to go back and see how often Kafka let his RB go early last year.

Maybe on some downs, but there were plenty of Oline whiffs going on too.

OK, one more then I really gotta work:

Anyone else think we are really missing Jacob Schmidt's blocking abilities? He's
been particularly solid picking up blitzes, and while I haven't been watching
that closely, I think I recall a few blitz pickups that Trumpy and maybe Smith
have not done as well with. I wonder if his presence might have helped give
Persa more breathing room against the PSU onslaught?
