[NU Sports] Iowa in 1996

We're up in Northern Michigan this weekend closing down our cottage. There are a group of Iowa fan families with some houses just north of us on our lake. Among other things, they have a sign in front of their garage which says "Hawkeye Fan parking, all others will be crushed." That pretty well sums it up for me. So I'll be flying my flag and wearing my colors this weekend.

Unfortunately, I was in NUMB when we traveled to one of the most
disappointing games in the past 15 years - the 2000 loss at Kinnick that
kept NU from going to the Rose Bowl. I would have to say that was one of my
worst experiences both on and off the field. The band was consistently
assaulted both verbally and physically (with various hurled objects). After
the fans rushed the field (I believe they had won just 2 games going into
that game) and the workers lowered the goalposts they couldn't be torn down,
various fans stopped by to insult NUMB, including parents encouraging their
small children to do so. I know that the majority of Iowa fans do not take
part in this behavior, but all it takes is one bad apple - and that
experience has tinted my viewpoint of Iowa ever since.
In any case, one stat from NU's 3-1 record against the Hawkeyes under Fitz:
in those games combined, Iowa has been favored by 43.5. Northwestern's
combined point differential over that span is +15 (and that even includes
the 11 point loss in 2007 where the 'Cats held a 4th quarter lead).
Go 'Cats!!!
