I should note that Smith and Phillips were probably also among the best pair of 
safeties we've had as well. Our D dropped off significantly whenever any one (or 
more) of those three were out with injuries, which unfortunately happened a lot 
last year. 

I agree that the other guys--Phillips especially--probably benefited from having 
McManis out there. The confidence in Sherrick's man-to-man abilities really 
freed things up for the safeties, and I suspect gave Hank a lot more options 
than he has this year.
