Anything that makes life tougher for other Big Ten programs is good for Northwestern - potential loss of scholarships, potential loss of good current or future coaches. We want these schools to make bowl games and basketball tournaments (so we can get 1/12th of the loot), but I also want to beat a team like Michigan regularly.

Do I wish we could become better than all of our conference brethren, just based on pure talent, coaching and home field advantage ? Yes of course. But if we can also become better than them based on fewer scholarships, coaching that is scarred by sanctions, etc., I will take that also.

We gave some of these programs a tremendous advantage during our post-Ara, University didn't care, didn't try era. Now if a few of them return the favor, through any kind of failure of institutional control, we should accept it, much like Michigan accepted victories against us during those dark ages. And make certain, that we are even more totally commited to institutional control at our place.

Maybe you can post a link to the article you are talking about.

couldn't find anything on the Freep site regarding the NCAA
nvestigation, though your post implies that this is the subject of the
ree Press article.

he only article I could find on the site deals with a real-estate
nvestment that went bad.

ere's a quote from the attorney of the real-estate development group
hat Rodriguez had invested in.

Coach Rodriguez, as well as the remaining LLC members, were passive
nvestors in several real estate developments, including the Legends of
uscaloosa condominium project that is the subject of this recently
iled case. These projects suffered setbacks due to fraudulent actions
f its original promoter and developer, Lamar Greene. Greene was
rrested in December 2008, and charged with multiple counts of fraud
rising out of his operation of these projects as a Ponzi scheme, which
emains under investigation. This lawsuit appears to be one where one
ictim is trying to recoup losses by suing other victims. Coach
odriguez will handle this personal matter through his own legal
ounsel."

agree that this is an unfortunate incident that further complicates
his man's life, but I don't think it is fair to suggest that this
ncident or the article describing the incident has any bearing on his
bility to run a clean football program, other than perhaps poor
haracter judgment when he put his trust in Lamar Greene.

don't think that there is any value for NU or the BT in a weak
ichigan football program.

MHO, as long as Rodriguez runs a clean strong program and doesn't break
ny laws, this campaign by the Free Press for his ouster is just mean
pirited pandering to those who are still in mourning over Carr's
etirement.

While the investigation may or may not turn out to be big trouble for
ig
lue, what their fans should be worried about is how many players
ichRod
as thoroughly ticked off. Multiple players were responsible for the
eports to the newspaper and presumably to the NCAA about the training
iolations, which means the dislike of RichRod must run deep. That won't
e
ixed easily or quickly, even if he survives a thorough NCAA
nvestigation.
f course, if an investigation confirms the players' story, as is
ikely,
hen he is in even more trouble. Michigan has never suffered serious
CAA
iolations in football and won't take those lightly - especially if they
eep losing.

We all should be familiar with the NCAA guidelines for off season
workouts as a result of the Wheeler incident.

They appear to be one of those areas where the NCAA doesn't have much
enforcement because it is very difficult to prove that a player was
forced to practice and the players and coaches do hang out a lot even
 during the off season.

What they have now are some players who complained that RichRod was
holding illegal practices. When they check, they will discover that
ot
all players feel that way and it will become a "he said" sort of
 discussion.

My prediction is that if they do anything, they will come back and say
that coaches can't be present at some of the unofficial workouts which
will be a slap on the wrist.

In another year or two, everyone on the team will be recruited by
RichRod. These issues will go away and they will be able to continue
the offseason workouts without further complaint.
