[NU Sports] We lost to crappy Indiana

We have to quit labelling this 'a succesful season'

We play in the Big Ten - success would imply finishing above .500 in the league

We haven't done that this year. We have finished in 7th place, at 7-11

There have been 3 recent seasons of 7th place or better - Falk finished 7th in 84, Carmody finished 7th in 02 and 5th in 04.

Many might argue that the minimum standard for 'success' should be over .500 in the league:

Since the era of the NCAA tournament:

1940 - 4th place 7-5
1943 - 3rd place 7-5
1944 - 4th place 8-4
1946 - 3rd place 8-4
1958 - 4th place 8-6
1959 - 2nd place 8-6
1960 - 3rd place 8-6
1968 - 4th place 8-6

These are the minimum standard for a succesful season - not four games under .500, like this season. We are a member of the Big Ten conference, we should at a minimum win more conference games than we lose, to call a season a 'success'. By that fairly low bar, we won a lot of non-conference games this year, but it can't be labelled a success.

You kinda wonder what the situation would have been had our schedule been the
everse -- play hot and get on a roll early and then be in the limelight with
he showcase games at the end. Oh well.
Penn State appears to be one of those cases where they just have our number.
ike Iowa with PSU in football.
Losing at IU and Iowa hurts, but road games are tough and Crean will have the
oosiers back in a hurry.
But when you put all that together, it's a bummer of an ending to the season ...
specially after getting our hopes up ... and that after a horrible start with
oble out.
It'd be nice if the roller coaster continued and went up again with a nice NIT
un to set up for next year.
And once the initial disappointment wears away and we all look back, this is one
f the most successful hoops seasons in NU history -- and the future looks
right in Evanston.
GO CATS!!!
