[NU Sports] NU's football bang for the buck ...

I was looking at it fairly simply.

The athletic department is essentially supplying a higher percentage of fully paid students than are generally admitted in the larger student population.

If there were no athletic scholarships, and the university still admitted the same number of students every year, the amount of aid that the University could provide on a per student basis would be less.

At the end of the day it remains a silly set of hyptheses, but we don't have much else to talk about during the summer.

I wouldn't infer that, and not just because it presumes that all
scholarship football players would have been offered admission if they
weren't athletes (and that they would qualify for need-based aid, and
that they would choose to attend NU as a non-athlete anyway, etc.).
Northwestern would have X amount of money to give in grants-in-aid
whether it had a football team or not. Athletic scholarships are
something completely separate and should not be confused with other
financial assistance (which, for most of the "high percentage of
non-athletes," really means loans).
