[NU Sports] Another domino, not the last one yet?

Don't think that Obama was proposing or even threatening legislation (as
Hatch was). Seems to me that he was just expressing the frustration of
many football fans who want to see a playoff system rather than the
current bowl system. There are some of those "big traps" on this very
list (gasp!).
I support BT expansion because I think that when the hunt starts, it is
better to be the predator than the prey. If you don't have a predator
mentality at some point you will discover that you ARE the prey and the
predator won't be asking your permission.
I agree, however, that nearly every change has some set of unintended
consequences.
So the unintended consequence of the BTN meeting my demand to see more
NU football on TV is that the BT has now become predator in a
demographic college football land grab that will reconfigure the college
athletic landscape.
What is sure to follow is a TV network arms race and more consolidation.
If we do see this consolidating to a handful of super-conferences, they
easily could abandon the NCAA (which would find itself in the role of
defending the little guys against the big guys). That could easily
usher in the new era of pay to play. That could force NU to drop out of
the BT and join some lesser conference or division without a big TV
network where football players don't get paid, are still expected to go
to class, and graduate.
All because I wanted to see a few more NU games on TV.
Sorry.
Jeff

One good thing from all this is that Orin Hatch will likely now shut his
big trap about government intervention in the BCS and going to a
play-off system for football (which I believe would only hurt The Big
Ten in the long run in holding its invite to The Rose Bowl). However,
we still have Obama's big trap to deal with on the issue.
