I'm very happy for Utah. I had the opportunity to chat for a while with
Utah's Provost a few months ago, and they were really hoping for a
shakeup and opportunity like this, although I'm not sure even they
envisioned it happening this way. If I recall correctly, they were
hoping we'd grab Mizzou so they'd have an opening to join the Big 12.
The Utah faithful have been very frustrated with two recent undefeated
seasons in which they were shut out of the national championship game.
(Recall that they went 12-0 in 2004 under Urban Meyer and ended up
ranked #4 after a BCS Bowl win--they were the first non-BCS conference
team to get a BCS bid--and went 13-0 in 2008 and controversially
finished #2 to 1-loss Florida (ironically, coached by Urban Meyer), even
though Utah beat Alabama by a greater margin than Florida had a couple
of weeks prior . . . and Florida lost to 'Bama earlier in the year
before getting revenge in the SEC championship game.) Utah has a 9-game
bowl winning streak, longest in the nation. -Joe
