Subject: [NU Sports] Demise of Big XII

With UNL leaving the question of whether the Big XII will survive seems to
most observers to be set. Most stories I have seen are variations on the
theme of the LA Times story stating the Big XII South less Baylor plus
Colorado will join the Pac-10 as early as Saturday.

However, there is another round of rumors that has Texas and A&M trying to
keep the Big XII together, perhaps by inviting TCU. Supposedly the ADs of
Texas and A&M are meeting today to plot their strategy. Those two are
joined at the hip as far as conferences go, with Texas Tech perhaps forced
on them by the legislature. One other report I saw, and I can't remember
exactly where, had the Pac-10 inviting Colorado this weekend and then
continuing discussion with Texas and A&M, probably to eliminate the "Baylor"
problem and to assuage Colorado's fears of being stuck in the MWC if the
Pac-10 deal falls apart.

Boy, ain't this fun. Who would have thought that the ADs can enliven the
offseason so much.

One more thing: USC gets two year bowl ban and loses more than 20 football
scholarships; most likely loses 2004 national championship and Reggie loses
his Hesiman.
