CONFERENCE EXPANSION: The Pac 10 is looking eastward to the Big 12 in
its plans to expand and create two separate divisions to have a
conference championship game.
Pac-10 Commissioner Larry Scott issued a statement in response to the
latest expansion rumors and did not deny the report, but did act like
nothing is going to happen immediately.
"We have not developed any definitive plans," Scott said. "We have not
extended any invitations for expan-sion and we do not antici-pate any
such decisions in the near term."
As the name says, the Pac 10 has 10 teams now, and if it took all the
Southern Division teams except Baylor and then nabbed Colorado from the
Northern Division, the new members could join Arizona and Arizona State
to form the eastern division of the conference and the four California
schools could join with the two Washington teams and the two Oregon
teams to form the western division.
It could happen quickly or it could take some time, but the Texas powers
that be have always favored the Pac 10 over the Big 10 (too cold, muggy
and distant) and SEC (little academic prowess as a group and also some
teams are very distant).
