Former Ohio State player, Jack Tatum has passed away --He will be
remembered most for his paralyzing hit on Patriot (and former Purdue and Chicago
public league star), Daryl Stingley
As a son of an Ohio State alum and a Patriot fan, I followed both of their
careers --I was thrilled for my dad when Tatum help lead the Bucks to the
national title in 1968 (beating USC in the Rose Bowl on the way)--and I loved
Stingley on the Pats--They gave up a strong running back named Carl Garret
(I dont think he was related to USC AD Mike) to get him in the draft--When he
got hit in the 1978 pre-season game and it became apparant he would never
walk again , I forever hated Tatum--
When I lived in Chicago after graduating from NU, I used to see Stingley at
many Bulls games and would come over to him and tell him how much I enjoyed
his short tenure with the Pats--
I softened my stance on Tatum somewhat, believing he was just doing his
job --even in a pre-season game, but could never understand why he never met
with Stingley afterwards
