[NU Sports] Ouch

If John DeGroat were still around, even he would agree.

Hard to fathom the notion of him leaving when the program's profile and justifiable enthusiasm are at an unprecedented high. With its best player out, NU has done more in a partial season than anybody can remember for any full season. To have impartial observers mention NU and NCAA tournament in the same sentence is a testament to Carmody's acumen and steadily improving recruiting. The fact that he's been at the school as long as he has is part tribute to him and part to the school recognizing the reality of a very difficult NU situation (no tradition of success or of attracting players from traditional power high schools, a long list of failed coaches and turned down offers to other coaches, etc.). NU's patience and sensibility seem to now be paying off.

I can't foresee a scenario for anything but a (well-deserved) contract extension for Carmody and I can't think of anybody in the country who would've taken the NU job at any point in Carmody's tenure and done a better job for the program and the school.

I'd sure as hell like to see a terrific second half of the season, but even with a letdown finish, what's been accomplished to date likely makes the discussion of his future moot.

Firing Bill Carmody would be insane.
