I recall the advice that world chess champion Mikhail Botvinnik gave about resigning a game:

"Don't resign until it is obvious to everyone in the room why you are resigning."

Sometimes I think schools should do the same with firing their coaches.  Bill 
Callahan's dismissal at Nebraska two years ago was one such occasion, it was 
pretty obvious by then he had no clue what to do to fix his team.  (I will go
a bit out on a limb and say that Nebraska will be in a BCS bowl in one or both of
the next two seasons.)

Zook may be the next 'obvious' dismissal, if his latest wholesale coaching change 
doesn't fix the problems at Illinois.  (Far too often replacing both coordinators
just prolongs the inevitable.) 

Carmody doesn't come close to that standard yet, IMHO.
