[NU Sports] First game

Growing up in southwestern Ohio (near Dayton), I was first a fan of the
Cleveland Browns and then, when they were created, the Cincinnati
Bengals. My dad, my brothers and I were so excited about the Bengals
that we went to their practices that first summer (1968, when I was 9
going on 10) in Wilmington, Ohio. Then we went to Bengals' games at
Nippert Stadium. You don't want to know.

That leads me to my first Wildcat game, which I think I have mentioned
before to you fellow listers: the 1971 14-10 Northwestern victory at
Ohio State. The game was Nov. 13. My Bar Mitzvah had been just three
weeks before, on Oct. 23. Both my parents were Northwestern alums so
those were heady times indeed in our house. Theologically speaking, my
adolescent recitation in front of friends and family of the story of
Noah paled in comparison to the Northwestern victory over Ohio State.
Now THERE was indisputable, purple proof there is a God, right?

As I have also mentioned, I attended the 33-27 Wildcat victory over the
Buckeyes in Evanston.

Another interesting thread: how many people can say they were were in
attendance at both the 1971 and 2004 Northwestern victories? (Well,
anyone can say. Who can say it truthfully?!) Certainly can't be that
many. I met a guy at the Tampa airport on the way out of town after the
Outback Bowl - didn't catch his name - who said he had been at both so
now we know the list stands unofficially at 2!

Let's hope the purple karma rocks the men's basketball team to victory
tonight over the Buckeyes! What in life is better than beating Ohio
State at anything?

Also, for those who don't regularly read the Northwestern football blog
Lake the Posts and thus might have missed this, here's a link to the
Yahoo! Dr. Saturday college football blog that names the Outback Bowl
the game of the year: http://bit.ly/5kkHz2. Mind you, that's not just
the bowl game of the year. Game. Of. The. Year.

Go Wildcats!

Alan
